Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don’t have to be an accomplished swimmer to create amazing images underwater. You will need to be comfortable putting your head — including your face — under the surface for a few seconds, at a minimum. But if you’re nervous, we can get some great images without leaving the shallow end of the pool.
-
Not as long as you might think. Ten seconds is plenty to get several great shots. Twenty seconds is more than enough to get dozens of images. It takes time to relax in the water, but as your heart rate slows, so does your need for air. So as you become more used to the environment, your ability to hold your breath longer will naturally improve.

Yes, it’s extremely safe. We take every precaution to make sure everyone has a great time and is never at any risk. We have a safety swimmer who is also our posing coach, and she will make sure you are completely at-ease in the shallow end, before venturing into deeper water. We have a rule when we work: Anyone can end the session at any time for any reason. But we almost never do, because we’re having too much fun.

In summer in Florida, cold pools are not a problem. However, as temperatures drop between November and April, most underwater photographers go into hibernation. Not us! We use a gas-heated saltwater pool in College Park that is always 90+ degrees, regardless of what the air temp is… so we continue to create beautiful underwater images all year round.

The general rule is “wear whatever you like yourself in.” However, fabrics behave very differently underwater than they do on dry land… some fabrics change color, some float, some sink. Sizes don’t matter as much… a dress that is three sizes too big suddenly becomes amazing and flowy. Thrift store finds can look like a million dollars in the water. Minor stains and rips become invisible. Best bet is to look around our site for some inspiration, and then we generally recommend bringing more than you think you’ll need, so we have lots of options to try. Very few items are damaged by the water — even silk — but don’t risk anything expensive or irreplaceable.

Hair should be left pretty much as it comes out of the shower. Any styling you try to do will be cancelled out the minute you get in the water. Makeup is a different matter. Waterproof and sweatproof makeup will last longer than regular makeup. We usually capture some close-ups early on in the session, while it’s still looking good, because even the most waterproof makeup only lasts so long. When we are shooting full-length shots, however, your makeup becomes less noticeable. Also, we have makeup artists available to assist if you’d like. Contact us for Makeup Artist pricing and scheduling options.

Yes. Both of the pools we use regularly have a private bathroom just off the deck near the pool, for quick and easy change of wardrobe and makeup touch-ups.

Some of our best images are of people with their eyes open…. but it’s definitely not required for a good image. To a large extent it depends on what you’re comfortable with, and we can work with whatever you want to do. We recommend avoiding contact lenses on in the pool. Nobody can see underwater anyway (without a mask or goggles), so contacts are not going to help, and you might lose them, or they can get affected by the water and get uncomfortable. Best plan is to wear your glasses to get to the session, and then go in the water without any corrective lenses. Our safety swimmer will be nearby to help if you get disoriented, but it’s pretty easy to figure out which way is up… just follow the bubbles!

Packages start at $750, which includes a pre-shoot consultation, the heated saltwater pool, the photographer, the safety swimmer & posing coach, a private gallery of images, and one edited, printed photo for your wall. We have a range of packages, depending on how many people and outfits, and how long we’re in the water.
-
We’ve designed our sessions to be one or two hours long. Most people (photographer included) get fairly tired after two hours of this kind of work, so that’s usually our limit. Our sessions include at least one edited photo printed for your wall, and additional images will be available for purchase if you would like. No high-pressure sales tactics… we are primarily looking to create a memorable experience for you.
-
We will send you a watermarked proofing gallery to review within two weeks of the session. After that, you can take as much time as you need to select your favorite photos from the gallery. We will edit at least one images at no additional charge, which we will print for you. If you decide you want additional photos edited, we are happy to provide you with a no-obligation quote for however many you’d like. We can also arrange for prints, on paper, canvas, metal, glass, and other materials, should you be interested.

YES! Absolutely, you can bring whatever you would like to take in the water with you. We have dozens of large pieces of colored fabric that you are welcome to use if you’d like, and you are welcome to bring your own. Provided you don’t mind it getting wet, feel free to bring whatever you like. We cannot accept responsibility for any personal items that gets damaged in the water.
-
Yes, bring someone! Please feel free to bring a partner or trusted friend who can help you be your best. Please let us know in advance if this person will be getting into the water with you, as this might change the way we work. There is always a covered place for your emotional-support human to sit and watch the fun. Please don’t bring small children with you unless there is someone to watch them, as we do not provide babysitting services.
-
It can be a little scary the first time you hold your breath and go under the water, but know that we have been doing this a long time, and there will be a dedicated safety swimmer & posing coach who can help you relax and breathe slowly, which is the key. We are unable to offer refunds on sessions that are cancelled less than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled session, but we’ve never had someone not be able to get some great photos, no matter their level of confidence.
-
Yes, you can. We don’t specialize in maternity session yet, but this is an area we are exploring. This is a specialized area of underwater photography, and we’ll offer it when we have all the answers. You are welcome to send us a note and let’s discuss!
